Is Your Nicosia Accommodation a Boutique or Lifestyle Hotel? Research Explains the Difference!

Two words – one meaning? Today, even global chains claim to offer a “boutique hotel” experience. Is it possible to find a single definition that is totally on-message with the needs of the modern traveller?

The attraction of staying in a boutique hotel, even for only a couple of nights, has captured the traveller’s imagination and transformed tourism over the last three decades. Visitors to the Cyprus capital who seek the best hotels in Nicosia increasingly look to the boutique concept and its promise of a “lifestyle” experience.

But everybody is likely to have their own definition of boutique and what they might expect at their chosen Nicosia accommodation from the moment they walk through the reception doors. Around the world and on this island alone, all types of Nicosia city centre hotels may declare their boutique or lifestyle  credentials. But there can be a difference between the two, and recent research provides instructive insight…

Experienced global traveller is no longer content with brand standardisation

Over the last 30 years, the increasingly experienced global traveller is no longer content with brand standardisation supplied by the major international hotel chains. Whether on annual vacation, weekend minibreak or business trip. The rise of the boutique and lifestyle hotel reflects a changed sensibility towards travel and leisure. A journey in the outward world is also about the inner journey of meaningful  discovery and transformation.

A panel of more than 40 industry professionals from around the world – commissioned by the Boutique and Lifestyle Lodging Association – agreed that the most important defining features of a boutique hotel are Cultural, Historical and its Authenticity. Boutique hotels are typically small hotels offering high levels of service, not part of a chain and provide unique and interesting services with “many, high quality in‐room features”.

Hotel experience should provide guests with important emotional responses

Hotels often describe themselves as boutique and lifestyle, but there are perceived differences.

Lifestyle hotels tend to be small to medium sized which are most importantly focused on innovation and providing a more “personalised experience” than the traditional “branded” hotels. The aesthetics of a lifestyle hotel are more contemporary, offering unusual design and architecture plus high level technology. A lifestyle hotel tends to focus on wellness and life‐enhancement.

However, the research reveals both the boutique and lifestyle hotel experience should provide guests with the important emotional responses of Discovery, Curiosity, Intrigue” and Amazement. Other meaningful emotions include, “Happy, Joyful, Amused” and “Sensual, Sexy, Romantic”. A luxury hotel is increasingly redefined as the richness of the personalised meaningful experience.

Nicosia Hotels and City Breaks for Culture and Business Events

City breaks versus beach holidays? Much depends on destination, time of year and personal preference, of course. Events such as annual exhibitions and special concerts can be a big visitor draw at any time, and early October is no exception in Nicosia.

When the high summer season draws to a close, autumn bookings at the best Nicosia hotels can often reflect a varied mix of international business people, friends or couples on a long weekend break. City breaks are generally the choice of the culturally curious and the energetic, keen to experience as much of their chosen destination that it can offer.

Many business or cultural events held every year

Customary sightseeing activities are always likely to include museums, galleries, historic buildings – even a spot of shopping! But during the autumn and winter season, overseas visitors booking Nicosia accommodation are likely to be in town for one of the many business or cultural events held every year.

Among a number of business conferences and trade shows planned for the months ahead, The Ideal Home Exhibition is sure to attract both casual visitor and professional interest, alike.

Ideal Home Exhibition

This is the 4th annual outing in Cyprus with more than 70 exhibitors divided into five sections covering furniture, cooling and heating, building materials, kitchen equipment and land development. There really is something for everyone as visitors are given a sneak preview of the latest developments in every conceivable aspect of home buying, building, decorating and furnishing, and home appliances. The Ideal Home Exhibition is at the ExpoCyprus, Egkomi, Nicosia Friday 4th – Sunday 6th October.

The same weekend – Saturday 5th – will see the 13th Cyprus-Russia Gala take place at the Presidential Palace, attended by Republic of Cyprus First Lady, Andri Anastasiades, and once again is in support of the Radiomarathon Foundation, which helps children with special needs and their families.

13th Cyprus-Russia Gala

Cyprus and Russia have enjoyed an ever-growing cultural relationship ever since the late 1990s with a continuous Russian arts programme comprising ballet and opera, classical orchestras, singer and piano recitals, traditional and contemporary jazz. Around 800,000 visitors to Cyprus are from Russia each year – up fourfold from the 181,000 a decade earlier (Republic of Cyprus Statistical Service).

Nicosia hotels are sure to see a number of visitors who will be attending performances at the Gala by Russian Eurovision star 2016 and 2019 – Sergey Lazarev, virtuoso accordion duo Bondarenko Brothers from the Moscow State Academic Theatre, Cypriot acclaimed Dionysos Dance Group and Greek-Swedish singer, Elena Paparizou and 2005 Eurovision winner.

Quality Sleep at a Boutique Luxury Hotel for Better Health and Productivity!

Quality sleep could save your life! Latest research links the power of sleep to protecting ‘metabolic’ health and the reduced risk of high blood pressure, obesity, and high cholesterol.

It’s absolutely good news then for business folk arriving in the Cyprus capital that the best boutique luxury hotel in Nicosia are geared up for totally blissed out forty winks, no matter how short the shut-eye may be!

It’s no accident that the Greek God, Hypnos is the enigmatic symbol for the bed N’mix concept hotel where every room is installed with a state of the art Coco-Mat “sleep system”. CLICK HERE to find out more about Coco-Mat and Hypnos

Every sleep-filled second counts

Late night networking and early morning wake-up calls are all par for the course on most business trips. Keeping fighting fit for the next round of power breakfasts, client meetings, all day conferences and travel schedules means maintaining optimal health and wellbeing. Every sleep-filled second counts when executive heads finally hit the pillow!

The well-known benefits of a good night’s sleep, especially for full-on business men and women include, better productivity and concentration. Less well-known benefits are helping to consume lower daily calories and reducing inflammation. However, a lack of proper sleep also has links to emotional and social intelligence, leading to issues such as failing to recognise other people’s emotions, a reduced tendency to think positively or willingness to solve problems, poor impulse control and inability to delay gratification.

Tended to dismiss sleep deprivation as no more than a minor detail

Now, a new US study of 2,000 people aged 45 – 84 looked at metabolic risk factors, such as type 2 diabetes, stroke and heart disease. Researchers at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), part of the National Institute of Health, found that “for every 1 hour of day-to-day variation in bedtime or length of sleep, there was a 27 per cent raised risk of developing metabolic risk factors”.

The results may be viewed as a “wake up” call to those who tend to opt for hunkering down on any thin-walled, lumpy hotel mattress because it’s just for a “couple of nights”, and they “are out all night” anyway!

Most people, not least the busy executive, have tended to dismiss the occasional or even ongoing sleep deprivation as no more than a minor detail (“for wimps”), and relatively unimportant when there’s important schedules to be kept. However, in more recent times, it’s increasingly recognised just how important quality sleep is to both the actual quality and perception of daily life.

Free Cultural Moments Are Never Too Far From Nicosia Accommodation!

Stepping out of your Nicosia accommodation, a cultural moment may often be encountered as you turn the very next corner. Absolutely not unusual in Cyprus, of course. After all, this is the actual location of Mount Olympus, rising up some 1,952 metres (6,404 ft) in the Troodos Mountains – the mythic home of Zeus, King of the Gods who created the nine Greek muses of creativity.

Many Nicosia hotels are only a few moments walk from engaging with the spirit of the muses plying their craft on a non-stop calendar of music, theatre, dance, art and film. Whether you are in Nicosia for a minibreak, on a business trip or visiting friends, there’s always likely to be an impromptu event happening on one of the many public squares to be found around the island capital. Many can be enjoyed throughout the year, and often with free entrance too.

Perfect open air spot for a live concert

One such free entrance was held on Wednesday 11th September in Old Nicosia’s Faneromeni Square. Built within the city walls during Venetian rule (1489-1571), it was the perfect open air spot for a live concert – aptly entitled “Spellbound and Magic” – to hear the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra play Beethoven’s rousing “Ode To Joy” and Mendelssohn’s scintillating overture of Shakespeare’s “Midsummer Night’s Dream”. Also featured during the 90 minutes was Dvořák’s Czech Suite including lively stylised, national ‘polka’ dances.

National dance closer to home is the theme of the 14th Mediterranean Folklore Dance Festival, another free open air event, staged at the Nicosia Municipal Park on Friday 13th (18:30 – 20:30). For one day only, before the festival heads off to Larnaca, the Heritage Association of Nicosia presents 29 dance groups originating from Cyprus, Greece and around the Mediterranean.

Dazzling displays of movement and colourful costumes

Musicians, dancers and performers are brought together by a universal love of traditional dance in dazzling displays of dexterity, movement and colourful costumes. The aim is to raise awareness, provide insight and create a dialogue between a diverse range of national and cultural backgrounds as expressed through the tradition of dance.

A cultural moment for food lovers also takes place in Nicosia Municipal Gardens a week later on Sunday 22nd September (11:00 – 18:00). The Indian Vegetarian Food Festival is part of a series of events organised by the High Commission of India in association with the Nicosia municipal authority to celebrate the 150th Anniversary of the birth of Mahatma Gandhi (1869- 1948) who pioneered India’s independence from British rule.

Cyprus September – Kypria International Festival Brings Cultural Explorers To Nicosia Hotels

It may be the first weeks of September and officially the start of autumn but Nicosia hotels are as busy as ever welcoming their guests for late holiday breaks and last minute getaways. That’s no surprise…

In some European countries, there’s still a week or two before schools and colleges return yet a distinct chill in the early morning air. But here in Nicosia, a ferocious Cyprus sun still rides high in a cloudless sky. Average temperatures push up the mercury to between 31-34C every single day. Many of the best hotels in Nicosia will be taking bookings from both dedicated sun worshippers and cultural explorers for a while longer yet.

Rich diversity of performing arts

Boutique lifestyle and authentic experience often go hand in hand. Many island visitors will be drawn to the annual “Kypria” International festival held in September since 1993. This year, between 1st September and 10th October, acclaimed international artists are featured alongside Cypriot and Greek performers, drawn from a rich diversity of dance, theatre, music, the visual arts and cinema.

Live art performance by well-known local talent, Lia Haraki, ushered in the festival with a unique live mix of dance, music, and artworks to be experienced “on the streets of old Nicosia, in old shop windows, in forgotten alleys and squares”.

Festival theatre also started with KA-F-KA, a contemporary dance and multimedia performance of  “a body overwhelmed” by the French Orian Dance Company, presented over two days at the THOC New Stage, Nicosia. Next is a presentation “Broken Glass” (Pattihio Municipal Theatre, Limassol, 9th -12th September) by celebrated American playwright, Henry Miller (1891- 1980).  A couple examine their relationship, past trauma and fear of the unknown, which can all prevent an individual from moving forward in their life.

Drama continues to unfold in Nicosia

Early September also brings world-renowned American jazz performer and nine-times Grammy nominee, Tierney Sutton with her band to the Nicosia Municipal Theatre (6th – 7th) and “Threttanelo” – puppetry set to music by eight Greek / Cypriot musicians and actors (Paphos Gardens – 7th | 8th | 14th | 15th).

More drama continues to unfold in Nicosia at the Dionyssos Theatre (18th | 19th | 22nd) where a production of “Lorenzaccio”, by French playwright Alfred De Musset (1810-1857) is based on historical events in 1537 surrounding Lorenzo de Medici and the restoration of the Republic in Florence.

Seeing out September, includes “The Arrow That Does Not Hurt” a Pocket Theatre production for both adults and children on the theme of togetherness and empathy at THOC Main Stage, Nicosia ( 20th | 21st | 22nd | 27th), and “A Comedy of Errors”, the enduring tale of two sets of identical twins by William Shakespeare (Nicosia Municipal Theatre, 23rd | 24th | 25th).

Nicosia Accommodation in Agios Dometios – History At Every Step!

Hotel location is more than convenience in the age of boutique lifestyle and authentic experience. The best Nicosia accommodation are not always jostled together overlooking a packed tourists’ spot.

To be quietly positioned in historic Agios Dometios is to be at the heart of today’s luxury hotel experience redefined as both cultural and immersive. Hypnos by bed N’mix is not only a short 4 kms (1.2 ml) from the city centre but is also just one street away from the city’s iconic, 17th century Saint Dometios Church.

Whether on annual holiday, weekend minibreak or a short business trip, the experienced traveller to Cyprus knows that a perfect Nicosia accommodation is often found in it’s own quiet, tranquil space – gratifyingly away from a main, noisy thoroughfare. The area of Agios Dometios can, with almost every step, reveal a living glimpse into different times of island history.

DID YOU KNOW… When Cyprus was chosen as the last of the torch stop destinations en-route to the 2004 Athens Olympics, it was the principality of Agios Dometios that the flame was carried through, held proudly aloft by a relay of five runners.

Area named after Saint Dometias

Once a small village during the Byzantine era, the area was named after Saint Dometias, a 4th century Christian convert who lived in a cave in Persian Mesopotamia. However, the saint’s holy work was brought to terrible halt by the Roman Emperor Julian who ordered his death in 362AD and the church dedicated to  the memory of Agios Dometios later built in the 17th century.

Cutting through the centre of Nicosia

One of the more pronounced influences in recent times is the creation of the Green Line “UN Buffer Zone” in 1963, which was extended after August 1974, following the Turkish partition of the island. Also known as the “Attila Line”, it stretches for 180 kilometres from Paralimni in the east to Kato Pyrgos in the west, cutting  through the centre of Nicosia. The historic line, which also runs almost parallel along the west to northern perimeter of Agio Dometios, remains a real division to this day.

Bustling visitor destination

However, the area around the Ledra Crossing, just outside the walls of old Nicosia, has developed into a bustling visitor destination for the curious after travel restrictions were eased in 2003. One of the areas selected was at the end of Democratias Avenue and since 2004 the checkpoint at Agios Dometios has become the main vehicle passing point. Ledra Street with its many bars and cafes continues to be the main shopping street of the capital, with both department stores selling luxury goods and small specialty shops selling arts and crafts.

Best Nicosia Accommodation at quiet Centre of Leisure, Business, Culture, Education!

It’s true… the best Nicosia city centre hotels tend to be found at the busy, buzzy heart of the visitor experience. Wherever those Nicosia accommodation happen to be located! Hypnos by bed N’mix, for example, may be in a quiet northerly corner of the capital (great for a good night’s sleep!) but still a handy, short distance from many visitor destinations for leisure, business, culture, education and more. All points, North, South, East and West of the hotel…

The sporting life

For those who love the sporting life and curious to see how the runners and riders perform abroad, the Nicosia Race Club is 1.2 kms (0.75 ml) northwest of Hypnos by bed N’mix. Only reintroduced into Cyprus from the end of the 19th century, the Club is the only official body authorised to stage horse races and betting in Cyprus. Racing takes place mostly two days a week (Wednesday, Saturday or Sunday), October through to July, and on most major holidays, including the Cyprus Republic Cup (October) and the  Cyprus Derby (November).

Oldest Government department

Heading in the opposite direction due south and nearly exactly the same distance from the hotel – 1.27 kms | 0.79 ml – is a very different type of destination. It’s also conveniently close by for business guests. The Land Registry of Cyprus, also known as the Department of Lands and Surveys, was opened in 1858 and is one of the oldest government departments with the main responsibility for the registration of property in Cyprus.

The continuing economic development of Cyprus in recent years also sees Nicosia, as the capital city, increasingly attracting international investors to the opportunities within its commercial as well as residential property sector. Many are focused on the city centre and, specifically, within the areas of Makarios Avenue and Stasikratous Street, as well as the streets of Ledra and Onassagorou.

Education, training and research

Due west of Hypnos Hotel – around 2.2 kms | 1.37 ml) along the Kyriakou Matsi can be found the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics (nearby to the University of Nicosia). Founded in 1990, and moving to a new purpose-built premises in 1998, the institute is dedicated to education, training and research into neurological and genetic conditions such as, muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis and epilepsy.

Centre for many embassies

Looking east from the hotel is the centre for many embassies including, those from Greece, Poland, Germany and Russia. Nearby is also the Russian Cultural Centre, and usefully, not far from the Cyprus Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Other government departments located in this part of the city, and nearby to the Cyprus Museum, include the Ministries of the Interior, Finance and Health.

Boutique Lifestyle at Best Hotels in Nicosia – Why a Good Night’s Sleep is the Starting Point!

Boutique lifestyle has redefined the simple act of booking a room at Nicosia city centre hotels. The all-important search for a “good night’s sleep” is only the starting point. Of the 500 or more hotels at least across the island, there is a growing number that reflect the rise in a new style of luxury tourism.

In their choice of Nicosia accommodation, the authentic and the personalised are increasingly a must for many Cyprus visitors. Ultimately, it’s at the best hotels in Nicosia that their desire and fulfilment can be as exquisitely matched as each room’s unique design of duvet and pillowcase.

Today’s often culturally curious travellers expect a redefined concept of luxury hotel aesthetic and experience, from the business executive attending a conference or a couple on a romantic weekend away to a family taking their annual vacation. Incredibly, the concept of the boutique hotel has actually been transforming expectations for more than three decades.

Head-turning aesthetic quirkiness

It was back in 1984 that the boutique revolution was said to have started with the opening of Morgan’s Hotel on Madison Avenue, New York. In a dramatic break from a tradition grown formulaic and dull the totally refurbished building offered head-turning aesthetic quirkiness served with personalised service attention, and a new-look cuisine.

The approach immediately took off. In the intervening years, boutique lifestyle hotels spread around the globe, not least, in Cyprus, where they continue to boost the island’s growing stature among a range of international business sectors, particularly in luxury travel. The entire tourist industry generates more than 15 per cent of the country’s GDP, which is estimated could rise to 25 per cent over the long-term. Worldwide, tourism is forecast to grow by over 6 per cent by 2026 (Amadeus Global Report, 2016).

Desire to connect with the meaningful

For the experienced frequent traveller, the meaning of “luxury” in hotel accommodation has shifted to a desire to inhabit and connect with the authentic and meaningful. The experience often translates to a        “home from home” environment. A distinctive intimacy and warmth is evoked by the unique choice of interior décor of specific theme based rooms, and the carefully placed “statement” furniture, ornaments, images and cultural artefacts.

Yet, boutique luxury is more than an uber chic hotel space with a compact number of select rooms, all sleekly fashioned elegance to a minimalist design. Holistic wellbeing and guest facilities are also perfectly harmonised to guest needs, from a hotel’s healthy eating tariffs, fully equipped gym and beauty spa, to 24 hour and concierge services, and valet parking.

Cyprus Conference Season – Boutique Nicosia Hotels Prepare

It’s now August, the height of the summer tourist season, and Nicosia accommodation is bustling with holidaymakers. But like the best Nicosia hotels, Hypnos by Bed n’ Mix is busy preparing for the many business delegates who arrive for the autumn conference and exhibition events held in Nicosia, and in other Cyprus cities every year.

From the 1980s and 90s onwards, Cyprus has rapidly evolved to become a recognised global business and services centre for tourism, finance and real estate. Today is estimated to bring in more than three quarters (80 per cent) of the island’s income and employment. Business and economic growth hit nearly 4 per cent in 2018 with the professional services sector achieving an average rise of 6–7 per cent over 24 months.

International investors and researchers

It is no surprise to see a wide range of business events being held across Cyprus. The increasing variety reflect the many business and services sectors that continue to attract international visitors, from investors and entrepreneurs to researchers and academics. Here are just a brief rundown of some of the  business events due in early autumn…

It’s likely that the first “back to school” guests will be booking to attend The International Conference on Language, Education, and Culture to be held at the Lord’s Palace Hotel SPA Casino, Girne (Mon 2 – Fri 6 September). Girne is located in north Cyprus, around 20 kms (12 mls) from central Nicosia). Between 500-1000 delegates are expected to attend. September also sees The Credit Risk Management Conference (Wed 25) at the Hilton Park, Nicosia, in which the latest trends inside – and outside of Cyprus – will be discussed.

Compliance, Supply Chain and Hydrocarbons

On October 4th, the Hilton Park will also be hosting the International Compliance Forum. With around 500 delegates who will hear how organisations can use the application of compliance as a way to give their business a competitive edge. In the same month (Thu 24) the Conference & Exhibition of Supply Chain & Logistics at the Filoxenia Conference Centre, Aglantzia will examine solutions that deliver cost savings in storage and distribution. The Centre is located around 7 kms south east of Nicosia.

It’s anticipated that the Cyprus Summit, taking place on Mon 4 and Tue 5 November, will attract around 1000 attendees. Among the key issues to be discussed is the role that Cyprus can play as significant energy producer as the result of recent exploration into hydrocarbons.

The above brief dip into the autumn schedule of conferences is only the start of a busy season of business events for luxury boutique hotels in Cyprus.
