Now, a new US study of 2,000 people aged 45 – 84 looked at metabolic risk factors, such as type 2 diabetes, stroke and heart disease. Researchers at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), part of the National Institute of Health, found that “for every 1 hour of day-to-day variation in bedtime or length of sleep, there was a 27 per cent raised risk of developing metabolic risk factors”.

The results may be viewed as a “wake up” call to those who tend to opt for hunkering down on any thin-walled, lumpy hotel mattress because it’s just for a “couple of nights”, and they “are out all night” anyway!

Most people, not least the busy executive, have tended to dismiss the occasional or even ongoing sleep deprivation as no more than a minor detail (“for wimps”), and relatively unimportant when there’s important schedules to be kept.
